Local Attractions

Description of Our Community:

Dingpu, nestled at the foot of Mt. Nuan Keng with her own picturesque scenery, is located in the south part of Tucheng Dist next to Sanxia, New Taipei City. The parents in our community are mostly labor. The atmosphere within is simple and kind. Recently, the population of this area increased because of the booming of the high-tech park and completion of Dingpu Station.

Summary of Our Project:

A great change had been brought to Dingpu after the opening of Dingpu Station. More and more visitors and commuters hustle and bustle to Dingpu With the traffic convenience, tourists can rediscover Dingpu by visiting with their families, exploring the local culture and tasting yummy food. No matter what the purpose of your trip is, just hop on a Youbike and start the journey. Through our introduction, you will understand Dingup better, and definitely agree that Dingpu is awesome!

Our Computer and Internet Access:

We use the optical fiber network in the computer classroom. It bandwidth is 1Gbps inside school and 300Mbps outside school.

Problems We Had to Overcome:

We needed to manage our time for participation of the Cyberfair and various activities. Workload needed to be shared if someone was absent from our meeting. Fortunately, good friendship never dies. We are willing to help each other. The task of the project was hard. But with careful and fair distribution as well as timely encouragement from our teacher, we could make the best of us.

As the design of the website was difficult to us, the teacher decided to use the free modules on the Internet. So, we just needed to replace the text and added the pictures , a great website was created. During the process, there were some problems that we cannot solve. As a result, we ask our webpage design consultant -Jane, a warm and friendly mother. We emailed one another to solve the problem.

Because our co-operation platform needs to store the data and photos of the program and the communication function, we decided to use the Google classroom to be our platform than we can get a legitimate right to use. We can log in with the school system account and it's easy to operate. Teacher works out through the platform. Whether it is weekdays or winter holidays, we can use the platform to complete the job and let the progress go forward.

Project Elements

What skills have you learned?

We learned how to use the Google Classroom, how to drawn up the interview paper, the email, and the skill of taking pictures. When we have the interview, we need to pay attention to the courtesy, the way of organizing the interview paper, the skill of designing website and the creation of mental map. Also, we learned from the actual experience of fundraising skills that is go ahead brave.

What are the ideas and methods of your teamwork and practice?

Our goal was to complete an outstanding project, use the internet and books to introduce the local sightseeing resource. With actual visits to our community, the result must be very rich. Before carrying out any activities, we discussed the details of the division of the labor and worked together to complete.

We had a sense of belonging to this team because the teachers said we are the best among the sixth graders. We also agreed with this team because it's the second time we cooperated with each another. At this time, we have forged a close bond of deep friendship.

What specific concepts did you realize?

We realized the importance between community and school cooperation. The topic we selected was to introduce local sightseeing resources to others. Full of goodwill as us, whenever the funding support is needed, the members in the community were also willing to help us because of our efforts.

In this era when carbon footprints could not be overemphasized, we need to value local cultures and resources. You don't have to go to Longshan Temple to worship the Gods. You don't need to go to Banqiao to enjoy the food, either. Take the step down to the mountain directly. It's our belief and we invite the teachers and students to join us.

How does the project be combined with the needs of your school and class?

The school has a lesson of the local land visit. It is time-consuming for teachers to spend their time collecting the information by themselves. We made the guide map. Every location had a clear introduction and related pictures. It provided teachers with abundant teaching materials. Moreover, we made the monopoly game in which the picture and name of each sightseeing resource were printed. The players can learn through playing in relaxing ways.

We carried out a fundraising event to print the leaflets of promoting Dingpu. Our principal led us to raise money from the community. Luckily, the fund we raised was sufficient to print the leaflets for both the whole school and the tourists from Dingpu Station. This activity fulfilled our needs and enhanced the visibility of our school at the same time.

Did you find any problems with the current education system during the study ?

A great deal of scenery of Taiwan has been portrayed in the textbook nowadays. However, the lack of the authentic information about our living environment is a great pity. Trying hard to make everyone notice the tourist resources of Dingpu, we hope we can fill the gap between textbooks and real situations.

What the role do you play at school?

We are a bridge .We connected the school and the community, so that the school education can be integrated with the community. And on the other hand, the resources of community can enter to school. It's a positive cycle. We are honored to play such a role.

What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computer software : google-classroom, xmind, namo, word, Photo-impact, Power Director, email.

digital cameras, digital video, mobile phones.

multi-function printer, recording pen, headset, flash drive.

How can the information technology tools help you? How do you use it?

We use single sign-in of the school soft system account to login Google Classroom. The teacher will use it to send the notification, assign homework and collect the results. We also used it to edit the information of our website.

1. Xmind was used to draw mind maps.

2. Namo was used to design website.

3. Word was used to draft our ideas.

4. Photoimpact was used to edit image.

5. Power Director was used to produce a short film to introduce our activities.

6. E-mail was used to schedule interviews and discuss the design of our website.

The digital cameras helped us to record the visit. Pictures and video clips are the best story tellers. Smart phones were also efficient alternatives for cameras.

The multi-function printer converted the results of our drawings into digital files to be placed on the website. The recording pen recorded the contents of the interview, so that we could make transcripts of our interviews. The flash drive was used to save the files and back up our data.

Which technologies were the most helpful? How?

The most useful technology is the Internet. Most of the information we collected is from the Internet. Surfing the Internet helped us solve the difficulties of the web designing. It also allows us to communicate in an asynchronous way.

Is there any unique or unusual ways the students used information tools and technologies ?

We made good use of the school soft system accounts, so we can use Google-classroom easily as a platform.

We used facebook fan page and the reward system of our school to encourage students to join our promotion activities. All the students and their parents of our school were encouraged to visit the places shown in our guide map during winter vacation. The kids could get one point from our reward system as long as they uploaded the pictures of their family's visiting to these places.

We also utilized free modules on the Internet, which reduced the difficulty of designing our website. And it looked professional.

We are the representative of the community

What has been or will be the impact of your project on your community?

We united the cohesion of our community by the leaflet. We listed local tourism spots in our tour map. Initially, the relationship between the shops of Gourmet Route like Xiang Hao Taiwanese Chicken Leg Bento, Hai Gang Goose, and The Industrial Zone Black Vinegar Noodles is competitive. After the information was put in the map, an aggregation effect occurred. The customers were not merely neighbors any longer; instead, they're from everywhere by MRT. A place with a lot of delicious foods could attract more visitors, couldn't it?

The connection between the school and community is closer after the shops were listed in the tour map which would be the material of our local culture lessons. The owners of these shops felt honored to be part of it.

What is the difference between your performances at the place?

We are quite active and brave to overcome the challenges of this project. The visit to Nougat Creativity Museum could not be confirmed at first. We decided to go there and ask for a visit directly because we wanted to introduce it to everyone. However, that the principal's taking us to carry out the fundraising was something we had never tried. Nervous but not timid, we completed the task finally.

Have other people around the world learned new things about your community?

We integrated the information about local culture, gourmet and attractions in our website where the visitors can get the tourism easily. These tourism resources have been changing constantly. For example, After Abbess Su charged the Shanxi Temple, a lot of change was made. There was even a shuttle bus to the MRT Dingpu Station, which was only known to a few people. The ATOP Time Arts Pavilion Museum provided a new watch course. There were real planes and tanks in the Ting Hsin Park. The Tucheng Family Library Branch was suitable for children among all the libraries of the New Taipei city. People were not familiar with these.

We had visited these places and brought the latest information, we believed that local people and visitors understand Dingpu better!

Can other people from all over the world have a new understanding of your place from your website?

Yes,they can! When mentioning Dingpu in the past, we thought of industrial area immediately. Now, they knew that we have a brand new as well as artistic MRT station. They can take the MRT to enjoy the food, visit culture and have fun with their families.

Have you established some new working relationships with people in your community?

During the process of fundraising, the chairperson of ATOP Time Arts Pavilion Museum, Lin,Wen-Chuan, introduced us to visit the Miaochueh Temple which would be our partner in the future. An exhibition of E-books would be held in our library by Tuchen Family Library Branch. Besides, the students of Dingpu Elementary School were invited to join a painting competition at the Shanxi Temple. We also cooperated with Yongfu Temple to hold an exhibition of lanterns. These activities showed the collaboration between our school and community.

How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We couldn't finish this project without many helpers. With Mr. Lin,Chia-Ming's clearly introduction, we knew the design and structure of MRT Dingpu Station better. Thanks to Ms. Chen,Ya-Chen from Tucheng Family Library Branch and the manager of Nougat Creativity Museum, we could not find such wonderful places for families to go without their support and help. We appreciated the donation from two generous gentlemen: Mr. Deng, Jin-Tsai of Yongfu Temple and Mr. Lin,Wen-Chuan of ATOP Time Arts Pavilion. Only with their help can our dream of printing bilingual leaflets come true. Also, we thanked Jane, an enthusiastic student's parent, who kindly instructed us the video playing interface.

We were thankful to Miss Xue who taught us how to design awesome pictures. Many thanks also went to Miss Chen who gave us a lot of useful suggestions. Thanks for English teachers' instruction of English writing. Most importantly, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Tu for his continuous support and encouragement.

With these helpers' support, more people could explore Dingpu and discover her beauty.
